Why Are Dental Cleanings Essential to Oral Health?

At Lasting Smiles of Willow Grove, we cannot stress the importance of dental health enough!  We like to work together with our patients and encourage them to continue effective dental oral hygiene practices at home.  By following simple preventive dental care steps and visiting your general dentist twice a year, you can ensure that your teeth are clean, strong and healthy.  Just by properly brushing and flossing your teeth two times a day, in addition to attending two dental cleanings and examinations each year, you can avoid or lessen your chances of getting cavities, gingivitis and enamel loss.

Dr. Sulzbach, your dentist at Lasting Smiles of Willow Grove, recommends visiting his dental practice twice a year for regular dental cleanings and examinations.  By visiting your dentist every six months to have an examination and teeth cleaning, you are improving your dental health. 

During the dental examination, we will check your gums, tongue and mouth to determine your overall oral health:

Here is what to expect at your dental cleaning:

  • Check for cavities, tartar and plaque on or in between your teeth
  • Remove tartar build-up manually or with ultrasonic devices (scaling)
  • Polish your teeth with a gritty toothpaste to remove surface stains
  • Floss will be used to ensure the areas between your teeth are clean
  • Fluoride treatment may be applied if you wish

The American Dental Association (ADA) and dentists alike recommend brushing your teeth for two minutes, at least two times a day with fluoride toothpaste.  It is not difficult to remember to brush your teeth once you wake up in the morning and before going to bed at night.  Brushing your teeth helps to remove food particles and plaque.  By avoiding certain foods, such as sugary foods and drinks, you can prevent having bacteria attack your tooth enamel, which can lead to cavities and tartar build up.  Another effective preventive dental care suggestion of the ADA is flossing.  The key to flossing is simply to do it regularly (once a day) and properly (between your teeth, as well as along your gum line).  With little time commitment and effort, these simple recommendations from the ADA can easily become part of your daily oral hygiene routine.

Oral hygiene is important, so you must do your part to keep your gums and teeth healthy.  Between managing your oral hygiene from home by brushing and flossing regularly, in addition to attending two dental cleanings and examinations each year, you are improving your dental health and lessening your chances of cavities, tooth pain, oral cancer and many other dental problems.  By attending yearly dental cleanings and getting X-rays taken as needed, you are giving your dentist and hygienist an opportunity to compare your oral health to that of previous visits.
